Trespasses by Louise Kennedy

★★★★☆

Set in Northern Ireland in 1975, Trespasses by Louise Kennedy is a beautiful novel that weaves a complicated love story amidst the backdrop of the Troubles. Kennedy masterfully portrays the challenges of living a normal life while surrounded by violence and political unrest.

Catholic school teacher Cushla meets Michael, a married Protestant barrister from Belfast, in her family’s pub, and a tumultuous romance ensues. At the same time, she gets involved in the life of one of her students after his father suffers a brutal attack. When the two stories collide, Cushla has to come to terms with things that are beyond her control.

Louise Kennedy's writing is nothing short of exquisite. Her prose is elegant and evocative, seamlessly transporting readers to the troubled streets of Northern Ireland and immersing them in the characters' experiences. The sensitive and nuanced handling of the historical context truly elevates the narrative. This touching story truly deserves the praise and acclaim it has garnered, and it is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeply moving and thought-provoking novel.
